In 1995, one plant of Cherokee Purple (from seed that Craig LeHoullier saved in 1991) gave fruit that had a deep orange red hue, shading to chocolate brown at the shoulders. Subsequent grow out of the saved seed indicated it was likely a skin color mutation (clear in Cherokee Purple to yellow in Cherokee Chocolate), as it has come true from that point onward.
