German Giant

Very nice pink beefsteak tomato. The fruit are usually over a lb. with many reaching 2 lbs. and more! It's amazing how productive this plant is with such large fruit. Flavor is rich but sweet and reminiscent of Brandywine. It's also earlier and more productive than Brandywine. No wonder so many people like this one!

Story:

From Tatiana’s TOMATObase:

  • Unknown.
  • Both regular leaf and potato leaf are in circulation, in SSE Yearbooks and commercially. For example, Tomato Growers Supply offers potato leaf version, and Sand Hill Preservation Center does not indicate the leaf type in their public seed catalog, but the SSE members who grew this variety from the seed obtained from Glenn Drowns listed it as 'regular leaf'. Glenn obtained the seed from Don Branscomb in 1985.
  • 'German Giant' variety can be traced as far back as SSE 1979 Yearbook, if not earlier (I have no earlier Yearbooks to check). The entries in the earlier SSE Yearbooks (1985) did not specify the leaf type.
  • It is not clear which version, regular leaf or potato leaf, is correct. Given its generic name, it is also possible that the two variants may be entirely different varieties. One SSE member who offered this variety in 2008 Yearbook mentioned that they observed both leaf forms, therefore crossed seed is also a possibility.
