Wisconsin 55

Another home and market garden favorite, WI 55 produces good yields of very good tasting and very good looking red fruit. It is disease resistant to blossom end rot, early blight and leaf spot. A good producer and a mainstay in my garden. Bred in WI, it does well in our MI weather. This variety does best when well fertilized.

Story:

Bred and developed by J.C. Walker at the University of Wisconsin in the 1940s, WI 55 is one of the last improved OP varieties before hybrids began to dominate the market. It’s parents include John Baer, DelMonte, Early Baltmore and Redskin.

In 2005 a Garden Web member, Martin Longseth, distributed seeds which helped to increase it’s popularity.
